There is no need to book a place on a walk unless this has been specifically stated, just check back to Go Walking the day before in case any details have changed. If you have not walked with us before, please be sure you are fit enough for the given length of walk.

Plan your walking week with our handy monthly lists of walks.

We are sure you will love our walks. Join up to three as trial walks and then join The Ramblers .

Joining an East Dorset Group Walk

All you have to do to join an East Dorset Group walk is to go to the given start point fifteen minutes or more before the given start time.

Most of our walks do not require you to book a place but occasionally a leader wishes to restrict the numbers on a walk. If this is so, any booking procedure will be made clear in the information about the walk that you can find either in our programme or online. If you are new to The Ramblers, on arrival find out which of the waiting people is the leader and introduce yourself.

Dogs are allowed on most East Dorset Group walks but if you do bring a dog, you must keep it under control. Some ramblers do like dogs, others do not and do not want dogs running around them. Some stiles are not equipped for dogs to go under them, which may cause problems if your dog is a big one. If a leader does not want dogs on his or her walk, the information on the walk either online or in the group programme will make this clear.

Because of the possibility of a cancellation due to self-isolation of the leader, or sudden chanages in conditions, walkers are advised to check with Go Walking as near as possible to the time of the walk to see if it is still taking place.

Joining walks in bad weather

Before you set out for any of our walks soon after heavy rain, or in poor weather conditions, it would be worth your while to check the current situation on a suitable local website.

If you are concerned that extreme weather conditions might prevent a walk taking place, you can contact the relevant leader in advance of setting out (the phone numbers are in the Group programme and a contact number or email address is given with each walk posted online). In such cases, please consider the road conditions that you could encounter on your way to the start and also for getting home if conditions deteriorate.

Wessex Wanderer Walks

The Wessex Wanderer Railway Walks normally take place annually from May to October and start and finish from railway stations along the Heart of Wessex (Weymouth/Bristol) Railway Line. The walks may be linear (from station to station) or circular with a mixture of rural, urban or coastal walks.

Walks vary in length and pace and are led by experienced members of the Ramblers from across the four Areas of the Ramblers covered by the line (Avon, Wiltshire & Swindon, Somerset and Dorset).

The Wessex Wanderers is a Ramblers FlexiGroup and is supported by the South Wessex and Severnside Community Rail Partnerships and Great Western Railway.
