Purbeck Plod

Our 25 mile challenge walk

starting and ending in Swanage

The Purbeck Plod was introduced in 1965 and ran yearly through to 2002. Our Group re-introduced the walk in 2008 adding the options of a 25 mile run and a 16 mile walk. You can see the route here. The challenge isn't just in the distance. There are a lot of climbs along the way. On the 25 mile route these add up to about 4,300 feet and on the 16 mile route, they add up to about 2,700 feet.

Each year we ask East Dorset Group members to provide some assistance. Please contact us if you would like to help.

Purbeck Plod 2016

The 2016 Purbeck Plod took place on Sunday 10 July 2016, a little later than the usual date at the end of June, owing to organisational difficulties and an attempt to avoid other walking events in late June.

We had 132 starting on the day. Our thanks to everyone who turned up to walk or run. Some of you have entered every year since 2008, and have now Plodded over 225 miles. For those who joined us for the first time, we hope you found the experience both challenging and enjoyable.

The weather in the morning was dominated by a thick sea mist making route finding difficult for some but later in the day the sun came out making conditions much more pleasant. Our thanks to the marshals and others who helped on the day.

If you would like to see the results you can look at them here.

Purbeck Plod 2015

The 2015 Purbeck Plod took place on 28th June, our 8th Plod and the 50th anniversary of the original Purbeck Plod on which our event is based.

We had 125 runners and walkers. Our thanks to all of you who turned up to walk or run. Some of you have entered every year since 2008, covering an impressive number of miles. The weather was mainly good, apart from a few attempts at showers. Our thanks also to all the East Dorset Group members who volunteered to help on the day.

If you would like to see the results you can look at them here. If you come across something you think is inaccurate, please let us know and we will try to put it right.

Purbeck Plod 2014

The 2014 Purbeck Plod took place on 29th June. We had 183 runners and walkers. They did the original circuit, the damaged parts of the South West Coast Path having reopened recently. The weather was mainly good, apart from a sharp shower in the late afternoon. Our thanks to all of you who turned up to walk or run this challenging course and also to all the East Dorset Group members who volunteered to help on the day.

Purbeck Plod 2013

The 2013 Purbeck Plod took place on 30th June. We had 165 runners and walkers en route from Swanage Pier, on a near perfect day for the challenge - not too hot and not too cold. After a wet winter, part of the South West Coast Path had fallen into the sea not long before our event and so the Plod followed a diversion via Kingston keeping the distance the same but reducing the total ascent on the 25 mile route to about 4025 feet.

A big thank you to our marshals and other helpers who sat or stood outside for many hours or worked for 8 hours in a hot kitchen turning out tea and pasties.

We would also like to thank the Long Distance Walkers Association for their help with publicity and also the Echo.

Here are some photographs of the event taken by Neil Davidson of the National Trust. We believe that permission was given for the display of all these photographs, but if you are in a picture that you don't want to appear, please contact us and we will take it down. If you would like a full resolution copy of any of the photographs, please ask.

Lost property

Lost property from the Purbeck Plod will be kept for 6 months and then disposed of. Currently in the lost property box: one "Trespass" drinking bottle left in the Church Hall. Please contact us if it belongs to you.

Purbeck Plod 2012

The 2012 Purbeck Plod took place on 24th June. 150 walkers and runners started from Swanage Pier and 10 pulled out during the day for various reasons. The forecasts for the 24th during the week leading up to it were abysmal and a number of our loyal participants decided not to come but they must have been sad to see that following some drizzle in the early morning, the day turned out all right. However, it was one of the toughest Plods yet as the heavy rain the night before had left a great deal of mud on the route. Runners in particular arrived at the finish plastered with the stuff.

Once again we have to thank our marshals and other helpers who sat or stood outside for many hours or worked for 8 hours in a hot kitchen turning out tea and pasties.

If you would like to see the results you can look at them in name order or in time order for the 16 mile walk or time order for the 25 mile walk or run. If you come across something you think is inaccurate, please let us know and we will endeavour to put it right.

Finally, if you have a picture from this year's event and would like to see it here, please pass it on to us.

The 2011 Purbeck Plod took place on Sunday 26th June.

We were delighted that 200 people turned up at the Pier at Swanage ready to test themselves on this hilly route. As usual, a few changed their minds about the distance they could go once they got to Kimmeridge, some retiring and others taking advantage of our shorter 16 mile walk.

Purbeck Plod 2010

The 2010 Purbeck Plod took place on Sunday 27th June, organised for the third year running by the Ramblers, East Dorset Group. Many of our participants were there for the third time and were able to greet the checkpoint marshals on the way round as old friends.

It was a really hot day and we were competing for attention with a certain World Cup match but we were delighted that 175 people turned up at the Pier at Swanage ready to test themselves on this hilly route. A few changed their minds about the distance they would go and took advantage of our shorter 16 mile walk simply because the weather was so very hot.

Once again we have to thank our marshals, who also gave up the chance of watching football, and sat outside for many hours while Plodders ran or trudged through.

Our 2 fastest runners went round in 4 hours 11 minutes and 4 hours 12 minutes respectively, half an hour ahead of the other runners. If you would like to see the results you can look at them in name order or in time order for the 16 mile walk or time order for the 25 mile walk or run. If you come across something you think is inaccurate, please let us know and we will endeavour to put it right.

If you have any comments on the 2010 Plod, please let us know.

Purbeck Plod 2009

The 2009 Plod took place on 28th June. We were lucky with the weather again although it was rather hot in the more sheltered spots. Fred Daldry, who was part of the original organising committee for the Purbeck Plod 40 years ago, opened the event for us this year. 123 people started off from Swanage Pier, the runners an hour behind the walkers at first, but catching up and overtaking them at various points along the way.

Purbeck Plod 2008

East Dorset Group's first Plod! After many hours spent organising everything from a detailed route description to supplies of food and drink, it took place on Sunday 15th June. 149 walkers and runners started from Swanage Pier on a beautiful summer morning. More than half of the entrants were local but many people made the effort to come from further afield, arriving from many parts of England and Wales. We even had one entrant from France and one from Spain!
