East Dorset Group is one of seven groups within Dorset Area

Our start point

Purbeck Plod

Our 25 mile challenge walk and run

17 and 12 mile walking routes also available

starting and ending in Swanage

The Purbeck Plod was introduced in 1965 and ran yearly through to 2002. Our Group re-introduced the walk in 2008 adding the options of a 25 mile run and a 16 mile walk and in 2018 a 12 mile route was added for walkers. You can see the route summaries here or can view the full routes for the 25 and 17 mile walks and run and the 12 mile walk. For copyright reasons we cannot display Ordnance Survey maps but you can download the routes for your gps here.

The challenge isn't just in the distance. There are a lot of climbs along the way.

Each year we ask East Dorset Group members to provide some assistance. In particular, we urgently need someone to help recruit volunteers or the 2025 Plod will be at risk. Please contact us if you would like to help.

Purbeck Plod 2025

The 2025 Purbeck Plod was held on 22nd June with a total 118 starters, 44 walkers and 6 runners on the 25 mile route, 43 walkers on the 17 mile route and 25 on the 12 mile route. It was noted that the 12 mile route was very popular with walkers in family groups and hopefully we can see more younger walkers taking part in the future.

After receiving earlier weather forecasts that it would be very hot for the Purbeck Plod luckily temperatures were a lot lower, in fact at the Steeple Checkpoint on the 25 mile route it was often very cold with mists coming in from the sea.

A new route avoiding Ballard Down was introduced this year for the 25 and 17 mile routes to avoid crossing the Studland to Swanage Road at Ulwell. We would be pleased to receive your views on this change, please send comments on this or any other part of the Purbeck Plod to Andy by email PurbeckPlod@uwclub.net

The Purbeck Plod is not a race but for those entering regularly it is used by many to see if their times are better or worse than in previous years.
A list of finishing times is given below and if anyone notices any error would they please let us know so they can be corrected. Thank you to everyone who entered this year and to all our valuable volunteers, who give up their time to make the Purbeck Plod possible. Here are the 2025 results. Congratulations to you all.

If you think there are any inaccuracies or you would like your name removed from the list please email us using the contact details below.

Purbeck Plod 2024

The 2024 Purbeck Plod took place on Sunday 23rd June. The 25 mile run and walk followed a revised route via Kingston and Swyre Head to avoid the cliff falls between Chapman's Pool and Houns-tout. Some have told us that the route this year was better and gave more spectacular views. The new route was very slightly shorter by less than half a mile, and reduced the cumulative ascent of the 25 mile walk by nearly 500 feet.

130 started of which 125 finished their chosen route. This year the shorter routes proved very popular with more entering the 12 mile route than ever before.

The Purbeck Plod was first organised over 50 years ago and has been run virtually every year. We hope to see you again in 2025.

Here are the 2024 results. Congratulations to you all.

Purbeck Plod 2023

The 2023 Plod took place on 25th June. Walkers and runners found it very hot during the morning but encountered a cooling breeze in some places during the afternoon. There was not a drop of rain. Here are the results. Congratulations to you all.

If you think there are any inaccuracies or you would like your name removed from the list please email us using the contact details below.

Purbeck Plod 2022

The 2022 Purbeck Plod took place on 26th June in good walking weather, although at times very windy on the Coastal Path and in exposed areas. Here are the results. Congratulations to you all.
